Marathon Monday…

It’s been one week since the Boston Marathon … one week since Des Linden broke that tape and made history becoming the first American woman to win the Boston Marathon in 33 years.

Her Boston title represents a long-awaited victory after being in the shadows to Shalene, Amy, Kara and various close-but-no-cigar moments over the last 6-7 years.  But it all ended for her with a windy and rain-lashed finish on Boylston.  It was finally her time!!

This past marathon was nothing short of historic for several reasons. It was the five year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing, which was also my first Boston making this event and this day close to my heart forever… I love this marathon, it’s history, it’s uniqueness, it’s fire.  And, I have enormous respect for anyone who got off the bus in Hopkinton and gave it a shot Monday.  I mean, when was the last time you saw Elites running in a jacket and blacking out at the finish?  The conditions were insane – kudos to all athletes who endured mother nature that day to experience what is Boston.

my ROCK!

So what can we learn from Des?  For me, it boils down to two things:

  1. Keep showing up– if you aren’t at the race, you’re not going to win. Bottom line. Frankly, several of you know I struggled and wanted to give up on 140.6’s but my pack and my hubby talked me out of it.  If you’re not on the starting line, you don’t even have a chance.  And you know what, I want a friggin shot!
  2. Keep putting in the work– Every day is a grind. It’s exhausting, it beats you down and you find yourself questioning ‘why?’  But you must keep going – they say success is small efforts repeated day in and day out… and I couldn’t agree more.  I’m constantly pushing for fitness and working hard to get the best out of myself. And someday, that will be enough to catch the dream…

Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails. Proverbs 19:21
